After the school day, students are encouraged
to participate in extracurricular activities that
meet their interests. Extracurricular activities
are usually conducted outside the school day and
students do not receive grades for their participation
in such an organization. Extracurricular activities
are found to have many benefits to participation.
Some of these benefits include raising academic and
social and Leadership skills. Involvement
in extracurricular activities also helps at-risk
students. Researchers
John Mahoney and Robert Cairns found that involvement
in extracurricular activities supports the at-risk
student by maintaining, enhancing and strengthening
the student-school relationship (Silliker , 1997).
The stronger this relationship is, the lesser the
chance an at-risk student will drop out of school.
Faculty members sponsor
such activities as Chess Club,
Paintball Team Club, Martial Arts, Lady Dragons Cheerleading,
Kingpin Bowling, Band, Choir, Student Newspaper,
Writers Circle Art Club, Drama Club and Basketball. During
breaks and summer vacation, faculty members sponsored
educational trips to international destinations including
Russia, France, Germany, Netherlands,
Turkey, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, as well
American locations such as Boston, MA, Chicago, New
York City, Niagara Falls, Columbus and Indianapolis. Horizon's activities
and trips are designed to help students become well-rounded
community members.
To promote enrichment learning, Horizon teachers
encourage their students to participate in local
and national festivals and competitions. Advanced
Math and Science teams train for all levels of competition.
In the three years since the establishment of the
school, H.S.A. students have participated successfully
in the North Eastern Ohio Science Fair and have created
their own Horizon Festival for Sciences and Liberal
Art Tunnel Fair. Students compete within their classes
to learn about their hometown through the Horizon
Knows Cleveland, OH Competition. This contest is
designed to introduce students to the culture and
history of the area in which they live. Through these
and other contests, students form a sense of the
place they will be expected to fill in the career
world.
In a world of constantly changing educational and
technological needs, the Horizon Science Academy
of Cleveland, boldly and with innovation, prepares
today's youth for the challenges of tomorrow. |
